Steelmaking is the process of producing steel from iron and coal. Steel is an essential metal that is required to progress to more advanced armor and equipment. Diamond-tier equipment uses steel variants as its base.

Process

Producing steel requires a higher temperature environment than regular coal can provide. Players need to heat coal to obtain coal coke, which can supply enough heat to melt a carbon-rich variant of iron called pig iron, which in turn needs to be crafted separately using iron ingots.

Pig iron needs to be prepared and covered with coal coke, producing a coal-coke covered iron ingot, which can be smelted using any fuel type to produce a steel ingot. Steel requires a long time to form, but as is the case with other metals, blast furnaces provide a significant reduction in wait times for smelting with no additional cost in fuel. Coal coke has an additional function as an alternative fuel source, providing a 50% longer burn time compared to regular coal.

Usage

Steel is a common crafting material in advanced metalwork. Common recipes that require steel include:

  • Firearms, such as flintlocks and muskets
  • Shields
  • Diamond equipment (armor, tools, weapons)
  • Steel locks
  • Blast furnaces (steel ingots replacing iron)
