Nations of Alathra

A nation state, or sovereign state, is an overarching governing body that holds sovereignty over one or more settlements, often including surrounding territory. Nations more often than not have a form of central leadership that holds authority over its citizenry. Central authority within a nation is often justified through various means, though usually through democratic or militarist means.

The term country will often be used synonymously with nation, but the two are not identical. A nation explicitly implies sovereignty, or sole uanimous control of the highest authority, over its territory, whereas a country may not. Occasionally, Larger nations may also include countries within them, known as constituent countries. These are almost always former nations that joined larger unions, like the historical Kingdom of Leporidia, which is a constituent country within the Dawnspire Commonwealth.
