Respire is a small town on the western coast of Almuren. As of July 2025, the town has a population of 9.
Background
Geography & Layout
Settled on the outskirts of a jungle in Almuren, the heart of Respire is surrounded by towering gray trees, their roots winding deep beneath the rich soil. These sentient trees, known as Sylvarenthos, communicate through telepathic means, serving as a natural defense to ward off the unwelcome. It is not uncommon for them to speak—but when they do, it is wise to listen. Aptly, this part of the jungle is known as the Echoing Holt.
Respire has no proper residential layout, but its most important buildings are interconnected by winding, natural roads carved from frequent journeys.
History
Before Respire was claimed and settled upon, it was an open meadow with bleached jungle trees and gnarly Sylvarenthos lying dormant, not yet touched by the faith of the Children. On July 12, 2025, it was founded and put to its proper glory. A Beastfolk by the name of Hucklethorne took it upon himself to claim Respire as his and his brother's home.
Culture & Society
Respire is a permanent home to few, as it is primarily a destination for wanderers in need of preparation for their next journey. Most of its visitors come and go without looking too far into their culture.
The primary language spoken in Respire is an elden dialect of Common, but a multitude of smaller, lesser known languages surround the place due to its sporadic, but diverse population.
Although these people do not celebrate often, every ten years, happening upon the same day, Respire is set to hold a Karnival of Motley. Respire invites all to trade, banter, and feast. There is no proper reason for why this holiday was created, but the people have integrated a celebration for Omnisia within its festivities.
A specialty of Respire is known as Ruefruit Juice, an orange liquid made from the rare cobalt fruits borne by the Sylvarenthos. It is said to have a sweet taste, but gets progressively sour the more it is consumed.
Tales of the Omniscient are told frequently around the village, and the story is depicted by painted stones lining the Echoing Holt. The people bow to Her Righteousness, and it is their faith that gives the Sylvarenthos their sentience. Omnisia, the Goddess of Knowledge in the monotheistic religion, the Children of Bipurity, or simply Bipurity, is thought to be the source of their protection from outsiders.
